Gil Magalhães

Gil Magalhães (b. 1974, Porto) is an Auxiliary Guest Professor in the Departamento de Música at Escola de Letras, Artes e Ciências Humanas of Universidade do Minho, Auxiliary Guest Professor in the Escola das Artes from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Flute/Chamber Music Professor in the Conservatório de Guimarães. Was Invited Assistant Professor in Instituto Superior de Estudos Interculturais e Transdisciplinares – Instituto Piaget (Mirandela) and was a Flute/Chamber Music Professor in the Conservatório de Música da Jobra/ Escola Profissional da Jobra, carried out, in the last 20 years, 75 workshops and master classes as a guest professor.
Magalhães holds a PhD from Universidade de Aveiro (2021) with a thesis “Recursos técnico-expressivos do Bansuri e a flauta transversal moderna”. Previous training includes a Degree in Music/Performance from Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo – Instituto Politécnico do Porto. An accomplished and versatile musician, Magalhães appeared in numerous concerts and recitals either as a flutist or conductor. He was a permanent flutist at Orquestra do Norte from 1993 to 2004, 1st Flute/Soloist A/Lead of Section from 1998 to 2004, in which he performed more than 1200 concerts in Portugal, Spain and France.
There are several performances as a soloist with orchestra, namely the Ibert Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with maestro José Ferreira Lobo and Orquestra Do Norte, Reinecke Concerto for Flute and Orchestra under Roland Melia’s baton and the Orquestra Do Norte, Reinecke Flute Concerto with maestro Pedro Neves and the Orquestra Académica da Universidade do Minho, Chaminade Concertino for Flute and Orchestra with Maestro Vítor Matos and Orquestra de Sopros da Universidade do Minho, and Mercadante Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in E minor under the direction of Filipe Cunha with Orquestra Filarmónica de Braga.
Invited performer at the DME Festivals – Dias de Música Electroacústica (2013, 2014), held at the Collegium Musicum (Seia). Magalhães performed in Recitals as an international guest soloist at the 5th Convención de la Asociación de Flautistas de España in Valencia, Spain. He is founder of “UnoEnsemble”, “ExpressOriente Duo”, “04 MixEnsemble”, “04 Linha Oriente” and “Linha 06 Expressoriente Duo”, projects focusing on contemporary repertoire. Dedicator of several solo works and chamber music, he participated in absolute premieres and recorded for the Portuguese Television Broadcast Corporation – RTP, SIC and Radio Antena 2, also integrating the extensive discography of Orquestra do Norte.
One of his last recording works – CD “Viagens – Gil Magalhães & Sociedade Musical de Arcos de Valdevez” resulted in the commissioning of 6 works for solo flute and band from 3 Portuguese composers, a repertoire that is scarce in the instrument’s solo literature. Magalhães was Conductor and Artistic Director of the Associação Recreativa, Cultural e Musical do Concelho de Sabrosa from 1993 to 2004. From 2004 to 2012 he was Conductor and Artistic Director from Sociedade Artística de Vale de Cambra, recorded the CDs “Sons e Sonhos” and “Artis Calambria”. From 2012 to 2020 he was Conductor and Artistic Director of the Sociedade Musical de Arcos de Valdevez, with which he recorded the CD/DVD “SMAVV – Concerto ao Vivo” and won the III Concurso Internacional de Bandas Filarmónicas de Braga.
From November 2024 he will be Conductor and Artistic Director of Sociedade Artística de Vale de Cambra Wind Band. Gil Magalhães is a founding member and member of the board of the Associação de Flautistas de Portugal – AFLAUP. Gil Magalhães plays an Aurumite 9K Powell Flute.
