Katharine Rawdon
The American flutist Katharine Rawdon has been one of the most versatile musicians on the Portuguese scene since arriving in Lisbon. She has been Flute Section Leader in the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa of the Lisbon National Opera House for 24 years, performing under eminent conductors including Rafael Frübeck de Burgos, Nello Santi, Antonio Pirolli, and Michel Plasson. Along with performing symphonic, opera and ballet repertoire, she has been soloist in the complete works of Bach, the Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto in C Major, and Alexandre Delgado’s Flute Concerto. She has also performed concertos with the O.S.P., the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Orquestra Clássica do Porto, the Orquestra Nova Filarmonia, the National Orchestra of New York, the New York Concertante Orchestra, and the San Luis Chamber Orchestra in California, in works ranging from Mozart to Boulez.
Before moving to Lisbon, she performed under Leonard Bernstein and Kurt Masur as a member of the Tanglewood Fellowship Orchestra and was presented twice at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as flutist of the Manhattan Wind Quintet, which took First Prize in the Yellow Springs (Ohio) and Artists International Debut Competition (New York). She also performed with the Amorphous Consort, an ensemble dedicated to new chamber works including classical guitar, in New York City, Boston, and for WGBH and NRP Radio
