Fenwick Smith |
 |
Fenwick Smith, second flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since l978, has spent five of those years as acting assistant principal flute. A member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1984, he has also performed on Baroque flute with Boston’s leading early-music ensembles, and was for thirteen years a member of the contemporary-music ensemble Boston Musica Viva. Mr. Smith often includes chamber music on his annual Jordan Hall recitals which, after thirty three seasons, are a prominent feature of Boston’s concert calendar. As a concerto soloist Mr. Smith has introduced to Boston audiences Lukas Foss’ Renaissance Concerto and the flute concertos of John Harbison and Christopher Rouse. His adventuresome discography includes première recordings of works by Copland, Foote, Gaubert, Ginastera, Koechlin, Dahl, Schulhoff, Schoenberg, Harbison, Cage, Pinkham, Rorem, and Reinecke.
Mr. Smith teaches at the New England Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center; during his 1997 - 98 sabbatical leave from the BSO he was also Visiting Professor of Flute at the University of Michigan. In 2001 he was the recipient of New England Conservatory’s Laurence Lesser Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Virgil Thomson: Rapsodico, Duo for flute and violin
These little-known pieces were issued on a Northeastern CD (since deleted) entitled “Virgil Thomson: Portraits & Self Portraits.” The first piece, “Rapsodico” for flute alone, is the first movement of Thomson’s Concerto for Flute. The second is his Serenade for flute and violin, a typically witty and succinct suite of five brief movements. Copyright Tony Tommasini.

C.P.E. Bach: the five Sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord
C.P.E. Bach, the best-known of J.S. Bach’s many musical offspring, wrote prolifically and exuberantly for the flute. Besides his many sonatas with continuo, he composed these five sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord; W. 83 in D, W. 84 in E, W. 85 in G, W. 86 in G, and W.87 in C. In these endlessly inventive pieces I am joined by harpsichordist Edwin Swanborn. Originally issued on a Revere Records CD (since deleted). Reproduced by permission.

Arnold Schoenberg Sonata op. 26
This is Schoenberg's Woodwind Quintet op. 26, arranged for high instrument and piano; the publisher provides parts for flute, violin, and clarinet. Schoenberg’s son-in-law, Felix Greissle made the transcription in close collaboration with Schoenberg himself. Pianist Randall Hodgkinson and I were fortunate to be in touch with Greissle as we prepared our performances and this recording; he was able to give us much insight and inspiration before his death in 1982.

John Harbison: Duo for flute and piano
John Harbison’s Duo was lost for many years, and I have no recollection of how I came to have a manuscript copy of it. After pianist Randall Hodgkinson and I played it to him, Harbison agreed to let us perform his youthful effort on our 1987 Jordan Hall recital. This recording was issued on an Archetype CD (since deleted). Reproduced by permission.
