| Praised for her virtuoso technique, rich tone and imaginative programming, Christina Jennings has established a reputation as one of the leading flutists of her generation. Winner at the 50th Anniversary 2001 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Ms. Jennings is the first flutist in fifteen years to win the coveted award. In addition, she earned First Prize at the Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, the William C. Byrd Competition, and the competitions sponsored by the National Flute Association and the New York Flute Club.
Highlights of Ms. Jennings' recent and upcoming concert schedule include her New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, concerto appearances with the Utah Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra 2001 of Philadelphia, and recital performances with pianist Lura Johnson. As a featured soloist, she has performed with the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet Orchestra, Canton Symphony, Flint Symphony, Waterbury Symphony, Vermont Philharmonic, Cleveland Philharmonic, Orquestra de Camara (Merida, Mexico), the Shepherd Chamber Orchestra, and the Pro Arte Symphony of Cambridge, England.
In addition to the standard classics of the flute literature, Ms. Jennings' concerto repertoire features a diverse selection from such prominent contemporary composers as Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Lukas Foss, Bright Sheng, Leonard Bernstein, Shulamit Ran and John Corigliano. She was praised for her August 2003 performances with the Utah Symphony in The Salt Lake Tribune: "Jennings was an ideal exponent for the adventurous new music. She made a persuasive case for Charles Tomlinson Griffes' Poem and the Joan Tower Flute Concerto with secure technique and an ingratiating stage presence."
Christina Jennings first solo CD, Winter Spirits, was released in 2001, and her recording of Shulamit Ran's "Voices" for flute and orchestra will be released soon on Albany Records. She was recently profiled in a cover story in Flute Talk magazine as one of the most promising young flutists in the United States, and she was featured on PBS's critically-acclaimed Marsalis on Music with Seiji Ozawa, Yo-Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis. Recent interdisciplinary projects include collaborations with the Weave Dance Company, David Parsons Dance Company, and actress/writer Jennifer Timm.
Ms. Jennings served as Principal Flute with Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, where she was awarded the CD Jackson Prize. She also held principal positions with Orchestra X, Sarasota Music Festival Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, and as Principal Piccolo with the Houston Grand Opera. Ms. Jennings has worked under the baton of Maestros Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin, James DePriest, Christoph Eschenbach, Peter Oundjian, and Bernard Haitink.
Active as a chamber musician, Ms. Jennings is a member of the Harpswell Trio, along with her husband, violist Matthew Dane, and harpist June Han, and she she has worked with the Zéphyros Woodwind Quintet, the Brentano and Avalon String Quartets and the Felici Trio. She is co-founder of The Reach Chamber Music Festival in Deer Isle, Maine, and has also performed at numerous other festivals including Tanglewood, Chamber Music Quad Cities, Sarasota and the Mammoth Lakes Chamber Music Festival.
Christina Jennings received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at The Juilliard School, where she earned the Nina Caruso Prize for Outstanding Achievement. In 1996, she was awarded a Frank Huntington Beebe Grant to pursue studies in London and Paris. Her teachers include Jeanne Baxtresser, Carol Wincenc, George Pope and Leone Buyse. While at The Juilliard School, Ms. Jennings was the teaching assistant to Samuel Baron. Since then, her faculty positions have included Bowling Green State University (OH), University of Oklahoma, the Bloomingdale House of Music and Bowdoin Summer Festival.
