| Paul Fried has long been regarded as one of America's foremost flutists and is noted for his beautiful sound. The Los Angeles Times has described his playing as " masterful". The Santa Barbara News Press recently described his playing as " absolutely stunning". Paul began his studies with his father Milton Fried and then at the age of eight, began studying with the world renowned flutist Julius Baker on a full scholarship at the Juilliard Preparatory School. He was offered his first orchestral position with the Utah Symphony at the age of 16 under Maurice Abravanel turning it down in 1965 to enter the Juilliard School, on scholarship. He received his Bachelors Degree in 1970 studying those years with Julius Baker. Fried also studied with Eugene Foster of the Utah Symphony and Marcel Moyce the famed French flute virtuoso and teacher.
At the age of 23 he successfully auditioned for the Boston Symphony, before his graduation from Juilliard in June of 1970. He has held positions as Assistant Principal with the Boston Symphony ( 1971-1982) and Solo Flutist of the Boston Pops ( 1976-1982). From 1982 to 1985 he was Co- Principal Flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony under the baton of Andre Previn. In addition he was Solo Flutist of the New York Chamber Symphony in 1985. He has appeared as soloist with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony, New West Symphony and Cedar Rapids Symphony. At the invitation of Herbert van Karajan he performed as guest Solo Flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic in December of 1976. He is the only American flutist who has performed as Solo Flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic during the van Karajan years.
Fried currently lives in Los Angeles where he has been Solo Flutist of the New West Symphony for the last 15 years. He also performs as Solo Flutist often with the California Philharmonic and the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. His most recent solo performances with The New West Symphony include Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp, the Telemann A Minor Suite, as well as the Bright Sheng flute concerto, Flute Moon. In January 2008, Paul performed the CPE Bach Flute Concerto in A minor with the New West, and in April of 2009, he performed the Vivaldi Il Gardellino Concerto. As an active soloist and studio musician, Fried has recorded over 200 movie and television scores. His movies include most of the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard scores, Robin Hood, Ice Age, Hoffa, Monster in Law, Anastasia, the Cat in the Hat, The Grass Harp, the Spirit, and many others. His recording of the Mozart Flute Quartets was used as source music in the movie Bride Wars.
Paul continues to teach, tour, perform and collaborate with musicians in the United States, China and Japan. In August of 2004 he was the featured American performer and teacher at the first ever Chinese Flute Convention held in Shenyang China. In November of 2005 he performed concerts in Tokyo and Osaka, with Japanese Flutist Nobutaka Shimizu and pianist composer Jean-Michel Damase. Paul Fried currently has ten solo recordings. Three of the CDs, are easy listening albums on the Simplicity Records label, and six classical recordings are available on Fried's label, Golden Tone Records. The other recording is Paul's arrangement and performance of the Vivaldi Seasons, on the Music Minus One label. His newest, soon to be released recording, titled Virtuoso Flute Trios, features him with flutist Alan Weiss and pianist Bryan Pezzone. This CD features works of Mendelssohn, Doppler, JS Bach, and Kuhlau.
